More McCain on his new 100 Year War

Presumptive GOP nominee John McCain last night told reporters that:

“Anyone who worries about how long we’re in Iraq does not understand the military and does not understand war.”

Maybe. Maybe not. But my reply would be this: anyone who doesn’t worry about how long we’re in Iraq does not understand the American public.

As one of my old professors used to say, “this is a testable hypothesis.”

That test will be administered on November 4. Study hard.

  1. Does not understand the military and does not understand war?

    Hmmm.

I have an acquaintance who often says things like this. He worked his way up to sergeant in the US Army, running a maintenance unit for tanks. He seems to think that his military experience makes him a combination of Caesar, Napoleon, and Alexander the Great when it comes to strategic acumen. He’s not the only former military guy I know who seems to think this way.

McCain spent some time in an aircraft and some time in a POW camp. Somehow, I wouldn’t annoint him as the next Wellington just yet.

  2. At the same time, I think people are deliberately misunderstanding the man. The US still has military bases in Germany and Japan over 60 years after the end of WWII. Peacekeeping continues in Bosnia more than a decade after hostilities broke out.

My understanding is that this is what he meant. Troop levels may be reduced, but there’s no way you’re leaving. And I’m not sure the rest of the world will let the US simply walk away after creating so much havoc.

You don’t get off that easy just ‘cos you elected a new president.
